Helen Russell Wins Second European Quadrathlon Title

Fladbury Paddle Club athlete Helen Russell, a member of the Rivers Evesham Gifted & Talented Programme, has claimed her second European Middle Distance Quadrathlon Championship title.

The championships took place in Brigg, Lincolnshire, attracting competitors from Hungary, France, Ireland and the UK. The race included a 1,500m river swim, 7.8km kayak, 30km cycle and 10km run.

Russell led from the start, finishing the swim first and maintained her lead through the kayak and bike stages with the fastest times in all three. While the run was more challenging, she crossed the line as the first female finisher in 3 hours, 3 mins and 33 seconds.

This latest title adds to an impressive record which includes her previous European Middle Distance win in 2023, the World Middle Distance Cahmpionship title in 2019, and the World Sprint Championship title in 2019, and the World Sprint Championship title in 2018.

Russell said:

“I am delighted to take this win and still be so competitive after many years of racing. I am so grateful for all the support I continue to receive to help me train, prepare and achieve this result.”

She will now prepare for the next round of the British Series in Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire, later this month.

The Rivers Gifted & Talented Programme offers tailored support to promising local athletes across a range of sports. This includes access to training facilities, guidance from experienced coaches and help with competition preparation. The aim is to give talented individuals the tools and opportunities they need to perform at the highest level, both nationally and internationally.

Helen’s continued success highlights the impact of the programme and the dedication of the athletes involved. Her performances serve as a positive example for aspiring athletes in the area, showing how commitment, structured support and access to quality facilities can lead to results on the European and world stage.
