Let’s Talk Water Safety - Drowning Prevention Week 2025

Summer is just around the corner, and while we’re all looking forward to pool days, beach trips and fun in the sun, it’s also the most important time of the year to talk about water safety.

We’re proud to be supporting the RLSS Drowning Prevention Week 2025 (17th - 24th June), a national campaign from the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) that aims to raise awareness and help prevent tragic, accidental drownings.

It’s a serious issue, over 700 people drown in the UK and Ireland every year, and many of those deaths are avoidable. Most happen suddenly, in everyday settings. It could be a quick swim in the river, a day at the beach or a fun pool session that takes an unexpected turn.

That’s why we believe that water safety isn’t just for swimmers, it’s for everyone. If you’re a regular in the pool, heading off on holiday, or just simply watching the kids splash about, a little knowledge goes a long way.


What We’re Doing at Rivers

All this week, we’re helping raise awareness in our centres and online:

  • Sharing daily tips and reminders on social media

  • Including water safety messages in our swimming lessons

  • Celebrating our amazing swim teachers, who make a difference every single day

  • Encouraging parents to have open conversations with children about water risks


Our Top 7 Water Safety Tips

These are the reminders we have been sharing across our Stories this week. Simple, practical and easy to remember.

  1. Check armbands and floats are secure

    Always double check armbands, float vests and swim aids before your child gets into the water.

  2. Don’t rely on inflatables for safety

    Inflatables are fun, but they’re not life saving devices. Keep a close eye and never use them as a substitute for supervision.

  3. Know your limits

    If you’re swimming in the pool, or in open water, don’t push past your ability. Fatigue, cold and panic can set in quickly.

  4. Keep pool exits clear

    Make sure steps, ladders and edges are always accessible, they’re your quickest way out in an emergency.

  5. Always follow the lifeguard’s instructions

    Lifeguards are trained to spot danger before it happens. If they speak to you or your children, it’s always a good idea to listen.

  6. Keep the little ones within arm’s reach

    Even if they can swim, young children should be close enough to reach out and grab in an instant.

  7. Walk, don’t run

    Poolside slips are one of the most common causes of injury. Slow it down, it’s not a race.
