Teach Swimming

with Rivers

This page brings together everything you need to know about swimming teaching opportunities with us.

Our swimming lessons focus on building confidence, developing skills and creating a positive experience in the water for every swimmer. We’re always interested in hearing from people who are passionate about swimming and enjoy working with children and families.

This page outlines swimming teaching roles, the Aquatic Helper programme, and how to register your interest.

Swimming Teaching Roles

Our swimming teachers deliver structured swimming lessons for babies, children and adults across our leisure centres. Lessons follow a progressive programme designed to support swimmer development, confidence and water safety.

Swimming teaching roles may involve:

  • Delivering swimming lessons to different age groups and abilities

  • Supporting swimmers as they progress through our lesson programme

  • Working as part of a wider aquatics team in a professional leisure environment

Relevant swimming teaching qualifications are required for paid teaching roles. Training and development opportunities may be available depending on experience and vacancies.

Aquatic

Helpers

The Aquatic Helper programme is designed for young people aged 14-16 who are interested in gaining experience in swimming lessons and working towards an Aquatic Helper Certificate.

Aquatic Helpers volunteer alongside our qualified swimming teachers, supporting lessons and learning how swimming sessions are delivered in a safe, structured environment. This role provides valuable poolside experience and is a strong first step towards becoming a qualified swimming teacher.

What’s involved?

  • 12 hours of volunteering within swimming lessons

  • Flexible hours completed across weeks or months

  • Volunteering hours can count towards Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)

  • Hands on experience supporting qualified swimming teachers

  • A solid foundation for progressing into swimming teaching roles

Support and guidance are provided throughout the programme.
