A specialist neuro rehabilitation course supporting people living with neurological conditions is preparing to welcome its next group of participants in January 2027, following an overwhelmingly positive response to its latest course.
Delivered by Midwinter Physiotherapy, the eight week Neuro Rehabilitation Course supports people living with conditions including Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), stroke and brain injury.
The programme focuses on improving strength, balance, mobility and confidence, helping participants work towards personal goals and greater independence in everyday life. It is like nothing being delivered in the UK to date as it’s a combination of aquatic therapy, adapted tai chi and neuro agility plus an educational session each week.
For many people living with neurological conditions, activities that were once part of their daily routine can become increasingly challenging. Whether it’s walking to the shops, enjoying time in the garden or feeling confident leaving the house, these everyday activities can have a significant impact on quality of life.
Through specialist physiotherapy guidance and tailored education and exercise, the course aims to help participants develop their physical abilities in a supportive environment, while encouraging confidence and social connection.
The latest course has attracted 10 participants, meeting its initial recruitment target, with preparations already underway for the next programme in January.
Results from an earlier eight-week pilot involving four participants have demonstrated encouraging progress. All four doubled or more than doubled the number of sit-to-stand repetitions they could complete in 30 seconds, with improvements also recorded in balance, walking performance and everyday mobility. All four participants reported greater confidence using the gym, said they would recommend the course and reserved places on the next programme.
The benefits have extended beyond the sessions themselves. Participants reported improvements in getting out of bed and walking outdoors, alongside returning to valued activities such as dog walking, bowling and other hobbies. These early findings highlight the potential of tailored, ongoing rehabilitation to support greater independence and participation in everyday life.
Previous participants have described the experience as “life changing”, with individual success stories highlighting the difference that appropriate rehabilitation and ongoing support can make.
One participant described their progress as: “Increasing confidence, and starting to walk unaided for short periods of time.” Another shared: “My bowling accuracy has improved due to improved balance.”
The programme has also made a difference to families and carers. One family member said: “You (probably) don’t know how much it means to me having had to carry the responsibility alone for so long. To have others pushing and encouraging too is such a relief.”
Another participant praised the support they received: “You were all completely brilliant... you will never know how much your encouragement has helped.”
The programme also aims to raise awareness of the importance of ongoing rehabilitation for people living with neurological conditions, including those who have completed their initial NHS physiotherapy treatment but would benefit from further specialist support.
With recruitment for January’s course now being planned, Midwinter Physio and Rivers Fitness are encouraging local residents, families, carers and healthcare professionals to find out more about the programme and the support available.
