James Cope: Chair by Day, Marathon Runner by Passion

On 21st April 2024, James Cope will stand poised at the starting line of the London Marathon, gearing up for the demanding 26.2-mile run through the heart of the capital. Having tackled a marathon before, he understands that it’s not just a physical trial, but a mental one too. Around the 20-mile mark, the reality hits hard – a daunting 10km stretch still lies ahead. His previous marathon experience during the subdued COVID era, lacked the usual street support and ended quietly at the finish line.

This year, James runs with a profound purpose – to rally behind a remarkable community charity, offering direct, tangible benefits from every donation. The Westbourne Park Family Centre, a charity established by Westbourne Park Baptist Church, stands committed to supporting and fortifying families within the local community. They nurture young lives, embodying the ethos of “Growing Acorns into Oaks,” and extend support to over 300+ children weekly, reflecting the area’s rich cultural diversity.

The centre warmly welcomes people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and beliefs, fostering an informal environment where children can play, learn, forge friendships, and cultivate a sense of belonging. Guided by Christian values centred on “loving God and loving people”, the charity strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.

James began rigorous training on 3rd November, transitioning from his intensive triathlon regimen to a focused marathon routine. Presently, he dedicates three days a week to running, engages in cross-training twice weekly, and prioritises strength and mobility sessions at least once a week. Throughout this training, his primary focus remains on building fitness while sidestepping potential injuries.

Keep an eye out for James, whether in one of the leisure centres or around town, sporting a vibrant lime green t-shirt with the QR code that says “SCAN ME!”.

His goal this year is to raise £5,000+ for the Westbourne Park Family Centre, and any support extended would be immensely appreciated. Donate here.

Good luck James!
