Council Investing £3 Million to Slash Carbon Emissions at our Leisure Centres

At our leisure centres, sustainability is at the forefront of our priorities. We're thrilled to announce a ground-breaking investment exceeding £3 million, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving our sustainability efforts across our facilities.

In a significant step towards environmental responsibility, Wychavon District Council have successfully secured a government grant of over £2.9 million, specifically for implementing low carbon heat and power systems at Pershore and Evesham Leisure Centres. To complement this substantial funding, they have committed an additional £400,000 from their own resources to support this initiative.

Wychavon District Council’s commitment to sustainability is echoed by Councillor Beverley Hardman, who expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to reduce carbon footprints and ensure the long-term sustainability of our leisure centres. "This investment will significantly contribute to our carbon reduction targets while enhancing the long-term sustainability of our facilities," remarked Councillor Hardman.

This ambitious project entails a comprehensive overhaul of our existing infrastructure. Outdated gas heating systems at both centres will be replaced with cutting-edge air source heat pumps, offering efficient and eco-friendly heating solutions. Additionally, we'll install destratification fans and solar panels on our rooftops to further boost energy efficiency and renewable energy generation.

We anticipate substantial outcomes from these measures. Pershore Leisure Centre is projected to achieve emission reductions ranging between 80% and 90%, while Evesham Leisure Centre aims for reductions of 60% to 70%. These efforts are expected to result in an annual reduction of approximately 700 tonnes of carbon emissions, significantly contributing to our goal of reducing carbon emissions by at least 75% by 2030.

This initiative underscores the dedication to environmental sustainability and sets a commendable example for communities across the region. By prioritising eco-friendly practices and investing in innovative solutions, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a greener, healthier future for all.
