Rivers gifted and talented members John and Natasza McClay have recently spent 8 days competing with 6200 paddlers and 140 clubs from 28 countries in the 11th IDBF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships in Szeged, Hungary!
The couple is part of the Purple Warriors, an injured veterans Dragon Boat team representing Great Britain. The group won Gold in the standard boat 500 metres in the adapted and impaired category of the competition, gaining a standing ovation from the other crews and officials as the first ever impaired crew to compete in the competition.
John said “To win a Gold at this competition was amazing but also we gained a place in the premier open 10 man small boat 200 meters against non-impaired world crew. We did not win but got a great amount of respect from the other crews for our efforts due to us being impaired and that little bit older”.
John and Natasza have both served in the British Army and use Dragon Boating to aid their recovery from PTSD. John was also a police officer and has now taken up training to work in animal control. He and Natasza are aiming to travel to Hong Kong to win gold again next year!
John and Natasza train at Pershore Leisure Centre and regularly use the health suite to aid muscle recovery and fatigue.
